Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice President of the European Green Deal, said: "Chemicals are an important part of our daily lives and they enable us to develop innovative solutions for a green economy. But we need to ensure that chemicals are produced and used without harming human health and the environment. It is particularly important to stop using the most harmful chemicals, such as mercury, in everyday consumer products."
Depending on the circumstances, transitional periods of 12 and 18 months will be granted to enable economic operators to adapt to the new rules. For some categories of luminaries mainly used for special purposes, such as the industrial or medical sectors, where there are not sufficiently reliable mercury-free alternatives, time-limit exemptions for mercury use are still granted under the restrictive conditions set out in the RoHS directive.
